Cancellation of the Misteria Paschalia Festival

Friday 13 March 2020

We regret to announce that the Kraków Festival Office, as a cultural institution of the City of Kraków and the organiser of the Misteria Paschalia Festival, has taken the decision to cancel the event, scheduled to take place between 6 and 13 April in Kraków.

The rapidly growing threat of infection with the coronavirus SARS-COV-2 and the high probability of resulting complications leave us in no doubt that as the organisers of the event we must prioritise the wellbeing and lives of Festival participants, artists and the Kraków Festival Office team.

The high risk of a rapid spread of the coronavirus SARS-COV-2 and the difficulties in predicting the resulting risks in the coming week confirm the recommendations issued by the Crisis Team working with the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland, including the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, that all public institutions including philharmonics, opera houses, theatres, museums, schools, universities and art colleges be temporarily closed between 12 and 25 March 2020.

As the organiser of the Misteria Paschalia Festival, by letting the event go ahead we would have been responsible for ensuring restrictive sanitary requirements and ongoing monitoring of the participants’ health. This would have made it impossible for artists and audiences to enjoy festival events in comfort, especially given their intimate nature. All this has ultimately led us to making the difficult decision to cancel one of Kraków’s most important cultural events of the year, taking place during Holy Week.

As such, the Kraków Festival Office regrets to announce that the Misteria Paschalia Festival, planned for between 6 and 13 April in Kraków, will not be held at the scheduled or later time.

The coming two weeks were to be dedicated to intensive preparations for this year’s Festival; however, following the recommendation of the Governor of the Małopolska Voivodeship to put all activities of cultural institutions on hold for the coming period, the team of the Kraków Festival Office is unable to host the Festival while guaranteeing that all events take place as originally planned. Additionally, the costs entailed in preparations for the event would constitute a breach of public finance principles which we are obliged to comply with as a cultural institution. Another important issue is the high quality of our services and cultural events we deliver, which is something we would not be able to meet under the circumstances.

Given the real risk of artists being unable to travel to Kraków as part of their concert tours in Europe and around the globe, the decision to cancel this year’s Misteria Paschalia Festival seems all the more prudent.

We appreciate your understanding. Please follow the latest information on the Festival’s website, which will also enable you to experience the beauty of some of the greatest masterpieces of early music. See below for information on ticket and pass refunds.

Yours sincerely,
Director of the Kraków Festival Office
Izabela Helbin
