Born in Italy, tenor Valerio Contaldo grew up in Valais in Switzerland. He studied classical guitar at the Conservatoire de Sion, and then obtained the diploma in singing class of Gary Magby at the Conservatoire de Lausanne. Contaldo was a finalist of the 2008 International Bach Competition in Leipzig and took part in numerous master classes run by Christa Ludwig, Julius Drake and David Jones. Valerio Contaldo can boast an extensive oratorio repertoire, which includes the most important sacral music works from Monteverdi to Frank Martin, i.e. compositions by Bach (Passions, cantatas), Mozart (Requiem, Davide penitente, Mass in C minor), Haydn (The Creation, The Seasons) and Rossini (Petite messe solennelle, Stabat Mater).

He sang at the Carnegie Hall in New York, Musikverein in Vienna, at the festivals in Beaune and Ambronay, at the Mozartwoche in Salzburg, during the Folles Journées in Nantes, Bilbao, Warsaw and Tokyo, while his opera production list includes performances on numerous opera stages: Opéra de Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Theatre Orchestre Bienne Soleure, Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Bordeaux, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, as well as at the festivals in Edinburgh and Aix-en-Provence.

 

Throughout 2017, he had the opportunity to interpret the eponymous role in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with Concerto Italiano (Rinaldo Alessandrini) in Barcelona, Adelaide, Shanghai and Beijing, with Cappella Mediterranea (Leonardo García Alarcón) in Brussels, Rotterdam, Paris (Festival Saint-Denis) and during the South America tournée (Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo).

 

He collaborates with the most eminent conductors of our times, including Marc Minkowski, Michel Corboz, William Christie, Rinaldo Alessandrini, John Nelson, Leonardo García Alarcón, Philippe Pierlot and Stephan MacLeod.

 

His works and talent are also documented by recordings made for Erato, K617, Sony, Mirare, Ambronay and Claves.
