EARLY MUSIC DAY: FLORES ROSARUM / AGNUS DEI, CHRISTUS IMMOLATUS EST
Music is an extraordinary time machine – and Early Music Day reminds us of this once again. The Kraków edition of this European celebration of early music will take us back to the Jagiellonian era. The concert Agnus Dei, Christus immolatus est will consist of excerpts from the 15th-century Officium tenebrarum – an elaborate and complex Tenebrae service for the Easter Triduum preserved in the archives of the Krakow Cathedral Chapter. The chants that introduced the faithful into a profound experience of the mystery of Christ’s death through dramatic texts and poignant reflective music centuries ago will be performed by the female vocal ensemble Flores Rosarum under the direction of Susi Ferfoglia. They will be complemented by organ improvisations by Krzysztof Pawlisz – the artist will play on the restored Renaissance-style instrument that returned to the presbytery of the church at the Benedictine abbey in Tyniec after over 80 years in January 2025.
Early Music Day is celebrated across Europe on 21st March – the first day of spring and the anniversary of the birth of the great Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a unique opportunity to rediscover nearly a thousand years of Europe’s sonic heritage through concerts and other music-focused events. In Kraków, this event is also the prologue to the Misteria Paschalia Festival. Celebrated for the 13th time this year, Early Music Day is initiated by REMA (Réseau Européen de Musique Ancienne) – the European Early Music Network bringing together initiatives and institutions in this field from across the continent.
