GRANDS CONCERTS: HIRUNDO MARIS / LA ROSA ENFLORECE
It may be hard to believe today, but it is a historical fact: there was a time during the Middle Ages when Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together peacefully in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Apart from that, it was a period during which the arts and sciences thrived – a real golden age. It came to an abrupt end with the beginning of the Christian Reconquista that not only established the united kingdom of Spain in 1492 under the sceptre of Los Reyes Católicos (the common royal title of Ferdinand II of Aragon and his wife Isabella I of Castile), but also meant the ruthless destruction of the multireligious and multicultural society. Most of the Muslims and Jews were forced to leave Spain or convert to Christianity, and those who refused to do so risked their lives.
In their programme, Hirundo Maris and Arianna Savall refer to longing for this period, which resounds throughout the songs of the displaced Jews. Sephardic Jews found a new home in other parts of the world – and in music where the idea of the peaceful co-existence of various religions is still alive.
For the first time in the history of the Misteria Paschalia Festival, the concert will be held at the Old Synagogue – the centre of religious life of the old district of Kazimierz and its Oppidum Iudaeorum.
The concert will be preceded by a meeting from the Listening Keys cycle.
