STRINGS DAYS! LECTURE: Bowing, Plectrum-Playing, and Plucking. A Short Tale of the Long Story of Knee-held Instruments
During her lecture, Justyna Rekść-Raubo will introduce us to the world of knee-held instruments, focusing on viols, vielles and knee-held fiddles, explaining their construction, playing techniques, and the transformations they have undergone over the centuries. In her presentation, she will explore the diversity of this group and examine how their design has shaped both their sound and performance practice.
Participants will discover how musicians of bygone days produced and modified sound through technique and informed interpretative choices, and how knee-held instruments function within the contemporary musical landscape. The lecture offers a deeper understanding of the role these instruments have played in the development of European musical culture.
