STRINGS DAYS! CONCERT: COHAERE ENSEMBLE
Meder, Schnittelbach, Telemann, Goldberg, and Scheidt belonged to the bevy of composers who contributed to the formation of Gdańsk’s Baroque musicscape, and shaped it through a distinctly European outlook and their individual artistic identities. Composed at the intersection of diverse traditions and styles, their music reflects the cultural wealth of the city, and the vibrancy of the musical life of the 17th and 18th centuries.
By juxtaposing the works of these composers, the Cohaere Ensemble presents the broad spectrum of styles characteristic of Gdańsk Baroque: from the virtuoso expression of Goldberg and the eclectic language of Schnittelbach, via the clarity of form and structural precision of Telemann, to Meder’s lightness of texture and the architectural clarity of Scheidt’s music. Despite the passage of time, this variety has retained its clarity and freshness, revealing at the same time the lavish range of compositional means that composers associated with Gdańsk employed.
Performing this repertoire in Kraków becomes a symbolic encounter with cultural heritage hailing from various regions of Poland: a transfer of Gdańsk music tradition into the space of a city with a distant yet equally rich artistic history, which emphasises the supralocal character of Baroque music culture.
