Alex Potter
Praised by The Times for his “ethereal tone and beautiful control”, Alex Potter is one of the leading countertenors on the European musical scene. Alongside numerous performances of works by Bach, Handel, and other established composers, he takes particular interest in seeking out and singing lesser known repertoire in concerts and recordings under his own direction. He performs with prominent conductors including Philippe Herreweghe, Hans Christoph Rademann, John Butt, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Jordi Savall, Stephan MacLeod, and Justin Doyle.
Recent performances of note include Bach’s B-Minor Mass with the Concertgebouw Orchestra/Philippe Herreweghe, a performance of works by Bach and Telemann with Arcangelo/Jonathan Cohen at the Wigmore Hall, and Benjamin Britten’s Abraham and Isaac with the tenor Thomas Hobbs in Vancouver. Together with Dani Espasa he designed the programme Handel – friends and foes – works by Handel and lesser-known contemporaries and performed it with Vespres d’Arnadí, for the opening of the 2022/2023 season of the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. For Christmas 2023 he conceived and directed a programme centred around Bach’s Magnificat, which toured in Holland and Spain together with the Netherlands Bach Society.
Alex Potter is on over fifty CDs, including six solo recordings. Amongst others, he appears on the most recent Bach Cantatas with Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent, John Nelson’s celebrated recording of Handel’s Messiah with the English Concert, and a new disc of Bach solo cantatas with Il Gardellino on the Passacaille Label. His latest solo record, “Antonio”, came out in 2023 to great critical acclaim.
After beginning his musical career as a chorister at Southwark Cathedral, Alex Potter was a Choral Scholar and read Music at New College, Oxford. He then went on to pursue further study in singing and baroque performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Gerd Türk, taking additional classes with Evelyn Tubb.
