The soprano Fanie Antonelou, winner of the Grand Prix Maria Callas International Competition in the “Oratorio-Lied” category (Athens 2005), is a lucid example of a singer combining artistry with emotion. She has been also awarded the First Prize at the Frankfurter Mendelssohn Preis in 2008 and 2009, and she was finalist at the song competition at the International Chamber Music Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” in Graz (February 2009).

She has collaborated with the Stuttgart Staatsoper (Inez in Verdi’s Trovatore), the Athens Concert Hall (Zofe in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg), the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad (Ernestina in L’occasione fa il ladro), and the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre in Russia, where she made her debut as Susanna and Zerlina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni.

 

In 2012, Fanie recorded the role of Susanna with the MusicAeterna orchestra and Teodor Currentzis in his much-discussed recording of Sony Classical, which won the Echo Prize 2014 in the category “Opera Recording of the Year (17th/18th century)”.

 

Her artistic appeal has led her to the Stuttgarter Liederhalle, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Dortmund Concert Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Hercules Hall in Munich, the Hermitage Theatre and the Philharmonic Hall in Sankt Petersburg, the Philharmonic Hall in Perm, the Novoya Opera in Moscow, the Cultural Days of the European Central Bank -Greece 2007 Festival, the Musical Olympus Festival, the Church of St. Francesco della Vigna in Venice, the Festival des Abbayes in Lorraine.

 

Her repertoire extends from medieval and early-baroque music to contemporary. Her elegant soprano voice and her distinctive timbre have assisted her to cross-over successfully repertoire of diverse epochs. She has collaborated with the following ensembles: MusicAeterna, Il Gusto Barocco, Ensemble La Fenice, L’arpa festante, Camerata Orchestra Athens, Solistenensemble Stimmkunst, Munich Bach Choir & Orchestra, Stuttgart Hymnus-Chorknaben, SWR vocal ensemble, Ensemble Sarband, Arsys Bourgogne, Latinitas nostra, and Ex silentio.

 

She has worked with conductors and soloists such as Teodor Currentzis, Kay Johannsen, Hansjörg Albrecht, Helmuth Rilling, Antonino Fogliani, Timo Handschuh, Jean Tubéry, Markellos Chryssicos, Simon Standage, Martin Gester, Jörg Halubek.

 

Fanie has studied singing, piano and music theory in Athens. She continued her postgraduate studies at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart under the guidance of Dunja Vejzovic and Ulrike Sonntag. She obtained a master degree with honors in Lied, class of Cornelius Witthoeft, and continued her studies at the Opera School of the same institution. She completed her studies with a specialization in early music at the Trossingen Musikhochschule (class of Jan van Elsacker).
