Johannes Kammler
Johannes Kammler is one of the most sought-after German baritones of his generation and is engaged internationally for opera, symphonic concerts and recitals alike.
He made his successful debut at the Salzburg Festival in August 2018 with the opera Der Prozess by Gottfried von Einem. In February 2019, he was engaged for the first time at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. This was followed by an invitation from Rolando Villazón and ZDF/ARTE to the TV show Stars von Morgen in Berlin and his debut at the Bregenz Festival in summer 2020 and at the Glyndebourne Festival in summer 2021 with Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen under Robin Ticciati.
Johannes Kammler has been a member of the Stuttgart State Opera ensemble since the 2018/2019 season, singing roles such as Malatesta / Don Pasquale, Guglielmo / Così fan tutte, Marcello / La bohème, Conte / Le nozze di Figaro, Papageno / Die Zauberflöte and Oreste in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride. Johannes Kammler was previously a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
His recent engagements include Figaro/ Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Garsington Festival, Don Giovanni at the Mozartwochen in Salzburg under András Schiff, his debut as Rodrigo in Verdi’s French version of Don Carlos at the Stuttgart State Opera, as well as his house debut as Count Almaviva and Belcore at the Semperoper in Dresden.
He has also given a large number of international recitals, for example with Roger Vignoles, Malcolm Martineau or Cornelius Meister on the piano, whether in London’s Wigmore Hall or Barcelona’s Palau de la Música for example.
In addition to opera and lieder, Johannes Kammler has also established himself internationally, particularly with symphony concerts. For example with Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen, Mendelssohn’s Walpurgisnacht, a staged interpretation of Haydn’s Paukenmesse at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam under Lorenzo Viotti, or as Donner in Wagner’s Das Rheingold on a European tour under Kent Nagano. The artist has also toured with Teodor Currentzis and Beethoven’s Ninth to Athens, St. Petersburg and Moscow and is regularly invited as a soloist to sing J. S. Bach’s great oratorios and masses, as well as Beethoven’s Ninth, with the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe in Europe’s largest concert halls.
Future engagements include his debut as Ottokar in Der Freischütz at the Bregenz Festival, as well as in Stuttgart and worldwide tours with Herreweghe with planned house debuts at La Scala in Milan or in Tokyo.
Johannes Kammler has already sung with important conductors such as: Kirill Petrenko, Bertrand de Billy, Oksana Lyniv, Andrea Battistoni, Asher Fisch, Marco Armiliato, Constantin Trinks, Ivor Bolton, Simone Young, Cornelius Meister, Gustavo Dudamel, Thomas Hengelbrock, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Marin Alsop, HK Gruber, Teodor Currentzis and Bernard Labadie. Collaborations with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonieorchester, Berliner Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela have taken Johannes Kammler to London, Berlin, Hamburg, Baden-Baden, Porto, Moscow, Caracas and Los Angeles.
Born in Augsburg, the artist received his first musical training with the Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir. He later studied singing in Freiburg im Breisgau, Toronto and at the Guildhall School in London. Johannes Kammler was a finalist and prizewinner at the two big international singing competitions: Neue Stimmen and Operalia.
