Baritone Romain Bockler trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse in Lyon where he obtained his master’s degree with honors (First Prize summa cum laude), then at the Studio of the Lyon National Opera, as well as with Cécile de Boever, Rosa Dominguez, Margreet Honig and Yves Sotin. He distinguished himself in several international competitions in Froville, Rouen, Vicenza (Italy), Budapest (Hungary) and Poznań (Poland).

On stage, his repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary opera. Romain Bockler performs in France at the operas of Lyon, Marseille (title-part of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo), Bordeaux, Avignon, Dijon, Reims, Caen, as well as in Europe (Musica Mirabilis Festival, Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht, Berliner Baroque etc.) and around the world. He collaborates with the ensembles Pygmalion (directed by Raphaël Pichon), Le Poème Harmonique (Vincent Dumestre), Les Arts Florissants (Paolo Zanzu/William Christie), Les Surprises (Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas), Le Concert Spirituel (Hervé Niquet), La Fenice (Jean Tubery), La Rêveuse, Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu (Franck-Emmanuel Comte), Ensemble Masques (Olivier Fortin; as Polyphemus in Acis & Galatea), Alia Mens (Olivier Spilmont) among others. 

Also very active in contemporary repertoires, he has created various parts in close collaboration with and under the direction of composers such as Peter Eötvös and Alexandre Desplat. 

Passionate about Renaissance music and working in small groups, in 2017, he created the Dulces Exuviae ensemble with Slovenian lutenist Bor Zuljan. He frequently performs with specialised ensembles such as Huelgas Ensemble, Doulce Mémoire, Weser Renaissance Bremen, La Main Harmonique and Diabolus in Musica. Numerous recordings testify to his activity in this field. 

For the season 2025/2026, he has been invited for various concert tours: with Les Surprises, Le Poème Harmonique, Concerto Soave, Alia Mens and Albert Recacens’s Ensemble La Grande Chapelle. 

The list of his latest recordings includes his first two recitals with Dulces Exuviae and Bor Zuljan: Josquin, Adieu mes amours (Outhere 2019) and Toutes les nuits (Outhere 2023); L’Egisto by Cavalli with Le Poème Harmonique (2023), Circe with the Ensemble Correspondances (2023), Lully’s Atys with Les Talens Lyriques (2024). Still to be released are Bernier’s & Campra’s Motets recorded with Concerto Soave. 

Since 2022, Romain Bockler has been teaching early music singing at the Pôle Supérieur Aliénor in Poitiers. 

After years of collaboration with the Concerto Soave, since 2023, he has been co-directing the ensemble with its founder Jean-Marc Aymes as well as the Mars en Baroque festival in Marseille. 

Romain Bockler also holds an engineering degree and a master’s degree in acoustic research.
