Tiago Simas Freire
Tiago Simas Freire (Lisbon, 1981) holds a PhD in music and musicology (Coimbra’s University and Lyon’s University) and three Master degrees, in recorder and cornett (Lyon’s National Superior Conservatory) and architecture (Lisbon’s University). He teaches the Recorder and History of ornamentation at Lyon’s National Superior Conservatory. He is a researcher at Coimbra’s University since 2012 and at Geneva’s Haute Ecole de Musique between 2016 and 2022. As a cornett and recorder player, he performs with several early music ensembles and records for labels Harmonia Mundi, Ricercar, SWR2, Psalmus, Seulétoile, Artway Records, Pan Classics.
He is the director of Capella Sanctæ Crucis, dedicated to the study and performance of Portuguese musical sources from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2021/2022 he leads the Artistic Research project “Per esercitarsi nella dispositione di gorgia” at the CNSMDL, in partnership with the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the HEM of Geneva.
In 2024 he received the REMA Award for best European cooperation project for “Bridging Musical Heritage”, a partnership between the University of Coimbra, the University of Valladolid, Artway, O Bando de Surunyo and Capella Sanctae Crucis.
